Mattana Design has revisited and repurposed it with a modern twist: the traditional horn with embossed scaramantic phrases. Scaramantic Mattahorn is born.

Many depictions of figures in antiquity wore horned helmets at important events, such as battles: including Alexander the Great, Moses, and the pharaohs of Egypt.

In Naples, this object became a symbol of popular tradition among whose beliefs superstition and the evil eye were widespread, as we still know them today .

In any case, since a little luck never hurts, so against bad luck and the evil eye it is good to own one, just in case .

Cavemen hung animal horns on the entrance to their dwellings, a symbol of prosperity and power, but also of fertility, thus of fortune.

Its amulet powers date back to Neolithic beliefs, when animal horns were considered symbols of physical strength and bringers of good fortune.

HISTORICAL CURIOSITIES OF THE SUPERSTITIOUS MATTACORN

Superstition also has its roots in the smorfia and, therefore, in the lotto game.

In fact, according to tradition, its origins date back some three hundred years to 1734.

Following a “historic” quarrel between the King of Naples, Charles III of Bourbon and the Dominican friar Gregory Maria Rocco.

At that time in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and especially in Naples, lotto gambling was particularly popular.

The king insists on making it legal so that he can cash in on the much money spent by the people through betting.

The friar, objected very strongly stating that the legalization of the game would drive the faithful even further away from prayer and thus from faith.

Following this discussion it is the king who prevails, finding with the friar the agreement that the game will be suspended during the Christmas holidays.

The ninety lotto numbers will thus be placed inside “panarielli” (wicker baskets). Becoming along with the folders with numbers to keep track of the draws, key items for “bingo.”
